Can Alexa work without the internet?

The short answer is YES. But that doesn’t mean Alexa can do everything without the internet the same it does when connected to the internet.

Keep in mind that Alexa is still capable of performing a number of useful tasks even when not connected to the internet. However, the range of tasks that Alexa can do without an internet connection is very limited.

Now you might ask, why are the functions limited? Why Alexa cannot perform fully without an internet connection?

Alexa is a cloud-based voice assistant, which means that it heavily relies on the internet to access the vast amount of information and services that it provides. Without an internet connection, Alexa is unable to access this information and provide many of the services that it is known for (weather, news, shopping, streaming music, etc.) This is why it is only able to perform a limited set of tasks without an internet connection.

What Can Alexa Do Without Internet?

While its tasks are very limited, Alexa can still be a helpful device in many situations. From playing music and setting alarms to providing basic information and controlling smart home devices, Alexa can continue to be useful even when you’re not connected to WiFi.

Let’s take each of these tasks and learn more about them.

01 – Local Voice Control

This is the feature that opens the doorway to command your Alexa without connecting to the internet.

By enabling Local voice control, you are able to control devices that are already connected to the offline-supported Amazon Echo devices. The supported echo devices are;

4th gen Echo
Echo show 10 and
Echo Studio

Tap on All devices at the top
Select the echo device from the list
Scroll down to Local voice control and tap on it
Turn on the local voice control

02 – Play Local music

Yes, you can still play music and songs stored on your smartphone or tablet on which the Alexa app is installed. The music will play through any echo device that has a speaker.

Also, If you use a music streaming app like Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, and Google music to play music through Alexa. However, the music should be downloaded to your device to play.

There is no special procedure to play music when you are offline. Simply ask Alexa to enable Bluetooth, connect the echo device, and then start playing the music you want.

03 – Control volume

You can give voice commands to control the volume on Alexa. Keep in mind that you can only command to control devices that are already connected to Alexa and support offline volume control.

If you control the volume of echo devices, then you will be able to do that without any problem.

04 – Keep Alarms Active

Alarms that have been when connected to WiFi will still work even if the Alexa is disconnected from the WiFi network.

That means you don’t have to be worried about whether the alarm will not work if a sudden connection interruption happens. It will still work and wake you up.

The downside is you cannot set up new alarms without connecting Alexa to the internet.

05 – Set up Reminders

Unlike alarms, you can set up new reminders while you are offline. Also, all the reminders you have set up when connected to WiFi will work, and the Alexa will remember them to remind you.

However, although you can use the Drop-in feature even if the other echo device is outside the house, you won’t be able to reach it when you are offline.

Therefore, if you want to call another echo device without connecting Alexa to the internet, It should be inside the home and connected through Bluetooth to use the feature.
