Alexa devices fully support the Spotify music streaming service. This means you can use your Spotify account to integrate with Alexa and use every one of the features Alexa offers for music streaming by giving a single command.

Among such features, there is a feature called multi-room music. Suppose you have multiple Echo devices or Alexa-enabled speakers in your home. In that case, you can use this feature to connect all the speakers/Echo devices you want and stream music across those devices simultaneously.

So if that is why you are here, and you want to know how to play Spotify on multiple Alexa devices, the good news is it is possible to do this! And in this guide, we will walk you through the steps you need to take to successfully set up your multi-room music group on Alexa.

What you need to know before going to play Spotify on multiple Alexa devices

As we said earlier, it is possible to play music on multiple Echo devices. But first, we need to figure out a few things before start going to set up the devices to play Spotify music.

01 – Not every device supports this feature

Like many features on Alexa, the multi-room music feature only supports a range of speakers. Luckily, it supports almost every Echo device (Except Amazon Tap device). However, if you are using a third-party Alexa-enabled speakers like Sonos, you may have to find out whether it supports the multi-room music.

That said, here is a list of Multi-room music compatible devices. Check if your devices are listed here.

  • Echo
  • Echo (2nd gen)
  • Echo (3rd gen)
  • Echo (4th gen)
  • Echo Dot
  • Echo Dot (2nd gen)
  • Echo Dot (3rd gen)
  • Echo Dot (4th gen)
  • Echo Dot (5th gen)
  • Echo Dot with Clock
  • Echo Show
  • Echo Show (2nd gen)
  • Echo Show 10
  • Echo Show 5
  • Echo Show 5 (2nd gen)
  • Echo Show 8
  • Echo Show 8 (2nd gen)
  • Echo Show 15
  • Echo Plus
  • Echo Plus (2nd gen)
  • Echo Studio
  • Echo Spot
  • Fire TV Stick
  • Echo Input

If your devices are listed above, then no worries because you can play Spotify music on your Echo devices!

02 – Multi-room music feature is not available for every region

not available for every region

There is a geo-location restriction when using this feature. If you are located in the US or Europe, then you will be able to use multi-room music without any restrictions. If you live in another area, you may need to verify that you can use this feature.

03 – Multi-room music feature cannot be used to play different music on different devices

As we said earlier, the multi-room music feature can only be used to play one song/playlist across selected devices simultaneously. If your intention is to play different songs on different devices, then this is not the feature that you are looking for.

By the way, if you have multiple Spotify accounts, you can easily create a household account and let other people in your home play their own music on Alexa (Ex: One song in the kitchen and another song in the bedroom)

04 – You cannot use Bluetooth speakers to connect and play music using the multi-room music

If you use Bluetooth speakers, then it is not possible to create a group with those speakers and play Spotify simultaneously. It is because you need to connect all the devices to the same WiFi network when creating the multi-room for Spotify music.

05 – You can only play music and audible books

play music and audible books

Currently, the multi-room music feature supports only the music stream on a group of devices. You can extend this by using the Alexa app and streaming audible books too. However, this is the only non-music content you can stream by using the multi-room audio feature.

So that is all you need to know before setting up your devices. Now let’s get into how to create a multi-room music group, and add your home devices to play Spotify music across those devices.

How to set up a group of devices to play Spotify simultaneously

To set up a group of devices and enable the multi-room music feature, you first have to install the Alexa app and log into your account. If you have already done this, then you need to connect every single device that you want to add to the group to the same WiFi network.

Once you are done, you can follow these steps to set up the group;

  1. Open the Alexa app on your smartphone
  2. Tap on the devices tab, which is located at the bottom right corner (before the menu icon)
Tap on the devices tab
  1. Now, select the “Combine music” option
Combine music
  1. On the next window, you have to choose between three options, Multi-room music, Home-cinema, and Stereo pairing. Select Multi-room music for now (We will explain the others below)

  1. Now it is time to select the devices that you want. Once you select all the devices you want to play Spotify, tap on the Save button
select the devices
  1. You will be then asked to rename the group. You will have multiple options there, choose one from the list or give a custom name for your group.

  1. Finally, tap on Save
tap on Save

Now you have successfully created a multi-room music group. However, there were another two options you could choose from. Let’s quickly understand what those are.

  • Home-Cinema: This feature allows you to create a custom home theatre experience using only a few compatible Echo devices. You may not need this for Spotify streaming.
  • Stereo pair: If you have two same Echo devices, you can use this feature to enable stereo support for those two devices. Again, you may not need this unless you want to stream Spotify music only on two devices in the same room/space.

So you have now set up a multi-room music group. Now, how can you play a song across the group?

You could simply say something like this;

“Alexa, play [song/artist/playlist name] on Spotify [multi-room music group name]”

Example: “Alexa, play blinding lights on Spotify downstairs.” Here the song name is “blinding lights,” and the group name is “downstairs”

Conclusion

We hope this guide makes it easier to set up and play Spotify on multiple Alexa devices you have. If you have any questions regarding this guide or need help, leave a comment below. So we will be there to help you.
